Wisconsin Futures Sale Highlights

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

It was another corker of a sale Wednesday night at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, WI. The Wisconsin Futures featured first choice lots from many of the breed’s most prominent cow families. As at the Wisconsin Nationals sale the night before, Tom Morris managed the event and handled the auctioneering duties while Horace Backus read pedigrees. At the end of the evening, 39 lots grossed $405,700 for an average of $10,403 - both National Convention based sales achieved the rarified five figure average mark.

National Convention begins!

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

It was a beautiful day on Monday as many people who arrived this past weekend got on the bus to tour several prominent Wisconsin herds. Among them were Mystic Valley, the Bruenig family of Jenny-Lou Holsteins; Budjon Farms, the Cull family; Ryan-Vu Holsteins, the Ryan family; and Vir-Clar Holsteins, the Boyke family. It was also a busy, busy day for the juniors as the Jeopardy Contest was held today, along with the dairy bowl written tests. Tonight, adults were treated to a poolside event, while the juniors were across the way enjoying a real Hawaiian luau.

Ginny Wolfe (NY), Debbie and Keith Decker (PA) and Howard Wolfe (NY) enjoy the first tour stop at Mystic Valley Farms. Even though it was a 9:30am visit, the Bruenigs served the bus a great dessert of vanilla ice cream and strawberries.

Summer Shows

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Many of us will be soon be, or have already been traveling to our local shows - District, Regional, or State events. Many of these shows, while relatively small in the show world have a great amount of quality from outstanding herds in the area. I recently was at ‘our local show’ and despite the high gas and fuel prices, the turn out was great and the quality was even greater! 73 head of Registered Holsteins paraded the ring with the largest class of the day being the Four-Year-Old Cow Class -10 head. Milk Mustaches in Michigan

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Our June is Dairy Month feature for today comes from Melissa Hart of North Adams, MI. A farmer’s wife, mom and freelance writer, Melissa is full of stories. One outlet that she has to share those stories is her blog. Click here to visit and read more from Melissa! Thanks, Melissa, for sharing this event with us! Sherriff and Got milk

It was milk mustaches for everyone as we donned white stickers over their upper lips to get their mug taken in front of a black ‘got milk?’ banner. After the photo shoot, we printed off the shots and gave them their complimentary milk mustache portrait. In addition we gave out chocolate and white milk and lots of goodie bags. By the end of the day we gave away 1000 chugs of milk, 600 goodie bags and printed off 300 pictures.

This was all part of a kids fest held each year in the county for kids to come to learn about fire and trafficME and JW and gotmilk safety, get their fingerprints done and play games, all for free. We were sponsored by the Hillsdale county Farm Bureau, the Hillsdale County Dairy Promoters and the Michigan Milk Producers Association.

Two local dairy families organized and worked the event. The pictures are of the Hillsdale County Sheriff, Stan Burchart, and my son JW and me.
