Highlights from the Sale of Stars
Another triumphant Holstein edition of the Sale of Stars averaged $27,734 on 49 lots Thursday, November 13th at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A crowd of over 2,000 filled the Ring of Excellence and watched cattle sell to all areas of the globe including Canada, the US, Mexico, United Kingdom, Argentina and Denmark.

World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion Thrulane James Rose (2E-97-CAN) entered the ring first and set the spectators buzzing. Her praises were sung by pedigree man Roger Turner as he extolled the value of the choice of her two daughters, a 3/08 Dundee and a 9/08 Talent. Led by her owner and consignor, Pierre Boulet, Rose looked in fine form – as she would prove the next day in being named Grand Champion of the Holstein Show. Richard Jordan of Kuna, ID placed the winning bid at $36,000. As keen as the crowd was to see Rose the high sellers of the evening were soon to come.

KHW Regiment Ariel-Red (VG-89-4YR-CAN) strolled into the sale ring and the bids came fast and furious. The full sister to the “Million Dollar” Apple and maternal sister to KHW Kite Advent-Red, Ariel sold for $85,000 to Peter Vail & Adam Liddle of New York. Chalk up another sale topper for the Apple family! Ariel was consigned by Barclay Phoenix, Hanover Hill Holsteins and Richard Green who also sold her 9/08 *TV Goldwyn daughter for $35,000 to Mike & Sheryl Deaver of Wisconsin – a couple very familiar with Apple!

Second high seller on the evening was the 6/08 Goldwyn daughter of the 2007 All-Canadian Jr 2-Year-Old, Blondin Lyster Beauty (VG-89-2YR-CAN) who was recently named Intermediate Champion at the 2008 International Holstein Show in Madison, WI. A sharp, stylish heifer consigned by Ferme Blondin, Blondin Goldwyn Beauty brought $75,000 from UK breeder Frank Phillipson.

Another heifer with a show ring connection sold for $70,000 – good for third high. Valleyville Dolman Missy, the 4/08 Regancrest Dolman daughter of Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy (VG-89-2YR-CAN) was purchased by Gert Andreasen of Denmark, with consignors Morsan Farms retaining part interest. Her dam won the Jr 2-Year-Old class at Expo and would win it again the next day at the Royal.

Preceding the Holstein sale, the Component edition of the sale featured 24 lots of Jersey, Ayrshire and Brown Swiss. The overall average was $7,733 with the Jersey group averaging $8,617, the Brown Swiss $5,150 and the Ayrshires $5,050. The Embryo edition of the Sale of Stars held on Friday evening after the conclusion of the Holstein Show saw 13 lots sell for an average of $3,027 per embryo. The high selling lot consisted of 4 MAS embryos from Comestar Goldwyn Lilac (VG-88-2YR-CAN), a show-winning daughter of Lylehaven Lila Z (VG-89-CAN). Consigned by Mapel Wood Holsteins, O’Connor Land & Cattle Co and GenerVations, the lot was purchased by Comestar Holsteins.
In its 56th year, the sale is now managed by the Semex Alliance. Lowell Lindsay and Julien Chabot served as Co-Sale Managers and Brenda Lee-Turner was the Sale Administrator.
