All-American Entries Due!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

As we head into the final weeks of the 2009 show season, thoughts of All-American contests are heavy on exhibitors’ minds. The World staff has begun sorting through show catalogs and placings, and it’s a nice time to remind you that forms need to be filled out and submitted by October 31! If you plan to show at either the Mid-East Fall National in Louisville and/or the Royal Winter Fair, you still need to fill out a form and submit that by the end of the month – whether you’re in the Junior or Open All-American contests! You can always call in your placings later from those two November shows. Entry forms for all three contests – Junior Holstein, Open Holstein and Jersey, can be found in the September issues of Holstein World and AllBreed Access, as well as on our home page at www.holsteinworld.com (see http://www.holsteinworld.com/page.php?id=13)

While 100% accuracy is necessary, one of the biggest and most important elements of your entry is the picture. The 2008 International Holstein Show Judge, Brian Carscadden, seconds that thought. “Great photos can do so much for the marketing of your cows and cow families. The same holds true for the All American nominating process . I have had the good fortune of serving on several All Canadian and All American nominating panels. It can be a difficult process because of the quality of the contestants as well as the different placings throughout the show season .There are only six positions available in each class, so when a final decision needs to be made, photographs play a huge role. As a former member of the panel, I just wanted to stress the importance of entering quality right-handed portraits. Great photos can make the difference when it comes to getting on the page and after-all it is a photo competition.”

Take time to make sure your entry is the best it can be – accurate, on time, and complete! It will pay off in the long run! If you have any questions on the contest, please contact any one of the following World staff members:

Baby Trapp couldn’t wait!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Congratulations to Paul & Sarah Trapp of Taylor, Wisconsin, on their birth of their son, Beau Delos Trapp. Born six weeks early, Beau arrived during World Dairy Expo week and has to spend a bit more time in the hospital bulking up from his birthweight of 5 lbs. 1 oz. Sarah is doing well and is already back at home. Our congratulations and prayers go out to the Trapp family as they wait for Beau to come home as well!

Prime Time VI Sale Highlights

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Prime Time VI at Sherona Hill took place in Edgerton, WI last night as sale hosts Mike & Sheryl Deaver welcomed a large crowd to their farm. The sale focused mainly on younger individuals from outstanding cow families and the group was quite appreciated as the sale averaged $5,824 on 63 lots. The Deavers co-managed the sale with Rick & Paula Bovre of the Great Northern and featured a sales force gathered from across the United States and Canada.

Two lots reached the $19,500 figure which tied for high seller of the sale. Lot #3 was the option of a first choice female by Sanchez or Goldwyn or second choice female sired by Shottle from Long-Haven Durham Randi-ET (EX-93 2E). The choice will be a full or maternal sister to Long-Haven Gold Rochelle (VG-88 2yrs), the All-American Spring Yearling in 2008 and a contender in the Junior 2-Year-Old class this fall. Consigned by Long Haven Farms of Clayton, MI, this lot was purchased by Ridgedale Farms of Sharon Springs, NY and Doug Wolfe of Richfield Springs, NY.

The other lot at $19,500 was Lot #19 – Ernest-Anthony Assure-ET – the 11/08 Shottle daughter of EK-Oseeana Ambrosia-ET. The news flash on the evening was that Ambrosia had been seen by the classification committee and is the newest EX-95 cow in the breed! She was the Reserve All-American 4-Year-Old in 2007 and is the daughter of the legendary 2E-96 Tri-Day Ashlyn. David Rama of Delhi, NY made the final bid on this consignment from Ernest Kueffner of Boonsboro, MD.
