District V Holstein Show – Hutchinson, MN

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

There is simply nothing better than traveling home to your county fair! For me, it’s where I learned the ins and outs of the show ring, competed against some of my best friends, and fell in love with the Holstein business. This past Saturday was the McLeod County Open Class and District V Holstein Show in Hutchinson, MN. The quality was top notch, certainly the kind of caliber you’d expect at the state level. Here are some results and pictures from the day. To all my friends in McLeod, thanks for a great show and see you next week at The Great Minnesota Get-Together, the wonderful MN State Fair!

It’s Saletime and Showtime on Prince Edward Island!

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Prince Edward Island is the place to be this weekend as the Island Heatwave Summer Sale took place today and the Atlantic Summer Show happens tomorrow! The Holstein World’s intrepid field reporter Megan Herberg is on the scene and here is a peek at some images from the show barn in Charlottetown and the site of the sale, Eastside Holsteins.

The Island Heatwave Summer Sale averaged $8,262 on 103 lots – see high selling prices below!

A little background on the shows here in the Maritimes…

Nestled in the northeast corner of North America, the Atlantic Holstein breeders gather at three shows throughout the year – each held in a different province – to showcase their best breeding. The Spring Show is held in April in New Brunswick, the Summer show is in August in Prince Edward Island and the Fall show is in October in Nova Scotia.

Each show brings in about 150 head of the finest heifers and cows. At this year’s summer show, a large majority of the animals in the barns are sired by the Premier Sire of the 2009 International Holstein Show, Braedale Goldwyn.

Lexis Holsteins of Freetown, PEI brings in the Champion of the 2010 Atlantic Spring Showcase – Penlow Geo Integrity EX-95. This impressive aged cow is a Robthom Integrity daughter of the popular All-Canadian show winner Penlow Georgette Outside EX-96 2E.

The fitting crew for Eastriver Holsteins works on one of many outstanding individuals that Bruce Wood and family have brought in. Lison Cote, Kevin Johnston and Morgan McGillan are part of the team getting out 16 milk cows, seven of which are senior 2 year olds!
IMG 4536

This unique piece of equipment is owned by Atlantic Holstein Promotions and is used at the Summer and Fall shows as the milking parlor.
The cows are tied right to the side of the trailer where 8 cows can be milked at a time. It is also rented out for other shows, sales and is available if a natural disaster occurs. The trailer is funded by many sponsors, government grants and is in memory of Athol Craswell well known PEI Holstein Breeder.

Crasdale Farms is located in Hunter River, PEI. Many All-American and All-Canadian nominees have stepped through the barn doors at Crasdale. Owned by Brian and Amber Craswell, Crasdale is managed by herdsman Robert Buoed, as Brian spends a lot of time on the road managing sales. Crasdale Farms focuses on balanced breeding and has brought in a very strong group of heifers and cows. Crasdale Goldwyn Lottomaina is the black cow on the end, a junior two year old daughter of Crasdale Lyster Lottery EX-93.
IMG 4541

Weeksdale Holsteins is owned and operated by the Weeks family of Pleasant Valley, PEI. Elmer Weeks and his son Blair milk 60 registered Holsteins. They have a strong line up of heifers is headlined by the calf standing in the picture, a Carisma December calf who was 1st at the PEI Premier Heifer show. Another heifer who has been making a mark in the Maritimes show circuit is Colstein Pentegon Unique, a junior yearling that was junior champion at the Premier Heifer show here on the Island earlier this summer.

Eastside Gibson Hope is an Mature cow from the host of the Island Heatwave Summer Sale, Eastside Holsteins. Although many of Eastside’s showstring sell today in the sale, Bloyce Thompson still has a strong string of cows for the Summer Show.
