The Fieldstone & Pinehurst Farms Sale was held today at the Great Northern Sales Arena in Fond du Lac, WI. A large crowd showed their appreciation for the deep, deep pedigrees carried by the cattle that passed through the ring as 78 female lots averaged $3,580.

The lineup featured animals from some of the breed’s most prominent cow families including Audrey Posch, Elegance and Ivory Mark. As Nancy Thomson commented in her welcoming remarks, “Appreciate the time it took to build these pedigrees. It’s a chance at a lifetime of breeding!” In addition to the Fieldstone and Pinehurst cattle, the sale also had a select number of guest consignments from Elegance Futures, Dutchmeer Holsteins, Sabofarm Holsteins and Michael Rammer.

New Zealand’s dairy industry still has reason to celebrate

Top cow affected by earthquake
Keryn Phillips, Holstein Friesian New Zealand

The Holstein Friesian breed reigned supreme at the recent three day NZ Dairy Event held in Feilding, 16-18 February, culminating in Canterbury cow Tahora Goldwyn Toni-ET VG88 winning the All Breeds Supreme Championship from a field of around 380 animals. Owned and bred by Dean Geddes, Toni returned home on Saturday to Taitapu, about 20km from the epicentre of yesterday’s earthquake at Lyttelton. By all accounts the Geddes family and the Tahora herd have made it through the earthquake relatively unscathed with loss of power their major concern.

Holstein Friesian judge, John Gardiner of Victoria, Australia, described Toni as quite an exceptional cow, “She could compete anywhere in the world and the best is still ahead of her.” Gardiner commented that it was not every day that a judge could place a Championship on a cow of such high quality. Toni displayed true class appearing very relaxed in the show ring chewing her cud and taking all the adulation in her stride.

Toni made a clean sweep of all her classes in the Holstein Friesian section winning the Five-year-old class, Best Uddered class, Senior Championship and winning the Supreme Holstein Friesian Show Champion. Her second day in the show ring competing in the All Breeds classes had her win the Five-year-old class, place second to a fellow Holstein Friesian cow in the Best Uddered class, win the Senior Championship and, of course, the Supreme Champion of the 2011 NZ Dairy Event.

Another aspect of the NZ Dairy Event involved a Youth section and a Youth Team Challenge sponsored by Semex. In the team challenge, teams of four had to complete a series of tasks and were awarded points for excellence and team work. The tasks involved clipping and preparing a yearling heifer for show within a time limit, presentation and handling of a yearling heifer, judging a class, an impromptu speech and completing a dairy industry and general knowledge quiz. The first four teams were members of Holstein Friesian New Zealand with the ‘Manawatu Turbo Fitters’ (Bernard Cox, April Schroder, Rachel Cox and Gabrielle Gloyn) placing first, the ‘Canterbury Crusaders’ second, ‘Taranaki Holsteins’ third and ‘Waipa Holstein Fitters’ coming fourth equal.
