The Making of a Magazine Cover

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

It couldn’t have gone any better. The weather was spectacular. The cow cooperated perfectly. The group was prepared for the picture and for the media. All-in-all, Tuesday’s photo shoot at the state capital building in Richmond, Virginia, was “some kind of good!”

I’m not sure how long it took to get approval for taking a picture of a cow on the lawn of the capital building, or how much red tape was involved, but the crew planning this year’s National Holstein Convention in Richmond was more than prepared. Lois Skeen, head of the publications committee, asked if I wanted to be there for the photo. What a great time to document just how much work goes into something like this. The end result, a beautiful picture taken by Carol McComb, will grace the cover of the Official Convention Program, being mailed out with the May issue of Holstein World.

Eastview Jose Joelle MG (VG-88) made her city debut under the guidance of her owners, Taylor and Matt Nuckols of Eastview Farm in Beaverdam. With the photo shoot scheduled for noon, it was a perfect time to capture some publicity for the convention and for the dairy industry. Many people came and asked questions, had their pictures taken with Joelle and learned more about Virginia’s dairy industry. Matt, a recent attendee of YDLI, put some of his training in place and had fact sheets readily available for the media regarding the operation of Eastview Farms.

Here’s a summary of the day in pictures! Secretary of Agriculture & Forestry, Todd Haymore, is the legislative representative in the photo. He was loving life that day – a very eager and enthusiastic person to meet!

No wonder models are tired at the end of a photo shoot!

With over one million people in the greater Richmond Metropolitan Area, Tuesday’s event was a great educational day for many and a wonderful lead-in to June’s highly anticipated convention.
