St. Jacobs /ABS Celebration Photos & Discussion – More Photos added

Holstein breeders from the Mid-Atlantic gathered to attend the St. Jacobs/ABS Fall Celebration being held Monday, October 22, 2012 at the Bob & Janice Landis farm (Landis-Mrk) in Leola, PA.

Wanting to do something different, St Jacobs/ABS decided to have a barn meeting with a daughter display/tag sale featuring offspring from many of the popular STJ/ABS bulls such as Dundee, Destry*RC, Aftershock, Perseus*RC, Attitude-Red, Resolute and Masterpiece.

An estimated 200 people stopped out during the day to see the daughter display, enjoy some ice cream & fellowship with the majority of the crowd coming for the evening discussion on “The Importance of Type in your Herd” and door prizes.

Tim Abbott opened the discussion, thanking everyone who attended, the sale hosts and Doug & Joan Seidel who worked to get the cattle ready. He gave a little background on St Jacobs, with the focus being on type and great cow families. He attributed much of St Jacobs success because of working with good people. He gave credit to ABS for helping to sell the semen as well as his Judge’s Choice panel who help to select the bulls. Two of his panel members, Chris Hill and Michael Heath were as to participate in the discussion.

Both Chris and Michael commented that they take into consideration cow families and look at both the top and bottom sides of the pedigree. They also pay close attention to feet and legs and mammary systems. Not looking for the biggest cow, they are looking for a balanced cow who exhibits dairy strength. This is not just for the show ring, but for the profitability of every dairy farmer’s herd.
