On a recent trip to our printer we got to see how the HolsteinWorld and DairyBusiness magazines are printed. Our magazines are printed in Hanover, New Hampshire at the Dartmouth Printing Company. Our printer is one of the oldest companies in America founded in 1793 as part of Dartmouth College. Eventually it was turned into a private company that specializes in short run publications, journals and catalogs on full-size web presses and was separated from the college. During our tour, we learned how our digitally uploaded magazines are turned into metal plates that are loaded onto the presses and then aligned and fine tuned until the inks are the right density to produce a quality printed magazine. Watching the pressman work with each of the plate colors until they are perfect while the presses are running at full speed is truly an art.
After the pages are printed, the magazine is built by layering its pages over one another until it is ready to join the cover and both are bound together. The last step is attaching the mailing labels and sending them out the door to our readers.
