All-American Entries Due!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

As we head into the final weeks of the 2009 show season, thoughts of All-American contests are heavy on exhibitors’ minds. The World staff has begun sorting through show catalogs and placings, and it’s a nice time to remind you that forms need to be filled out and submitted by October 31! If you plan to show at either the Mid-East Fall National in Louisville and/or the Royal Winter Fair, you still need to fill out a form and submit that by the end of the month – whether you’re in the Junior or Open All-American contests! You can always call in your placings later from those two November shows. Entry forms for all three contests – Junior Holstein, Open Holstein and Jersey, can be found in the September issues of Holstein World and AllBreed Access, as well as on our home page at www.holsteinworld.com (see http://www.holsteinworld.com/page.php?id=13)

While 100% accuracy is necessary, one of the biggest and most important elements of your entry is the picture. The 2008 International Holstein Show Judge, Brian Carscadden, seconds that thought. “Great photos can do so much for the marketing of your cows and cow families. The same holds true for the All American nominating process . I have had the good fortune of serving on several All Canadian and All American nominating panels. It can be a difficult process because of the quality of the contestants as well as the different placings throughout the show season .There are only six positions available in each class, so when a final decision needs to be made, photographs play a huge role. As a former member of the panel, I just wanted to stress the importance of entering quality right-handed portraits. Great photos can make the difference when it comes to getting on the page and after-all it is a photo competition.”

Take time to make sure your entry is the best it can be – accurate, on time, and complete! It will pay off in the long run! If you have any questions on the contest, please contact any one of the following World staff members:

Judge Johnson’s comments: I pulled out four cows that I really stand out. I pulled out my Jr. 2-year-old, a cow with a lovely udder; my Sr. 2-year-old, an extreme cow with length, power and yet enough dairyness throughout; and my two Sr. 3-year-olds who both exhibit extreme dairyness. Today, I’m going with my Sr. 2-year-old. What a beautiful cow with extreme mass, style and balance and what a great mammary system. It’s hard to find any holes in her. And following her will be my Jr. 2-year-old for Reserve. She’s just a little more snug in the udder attachments to place over the winning Sr. 3. Thank you and what a great way to start off the cow show!
