Swiss Expo Coverage by Megan Herberg

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

One of Holstein World’s traveling reporters found herself in the beautiful country of Switzerland just a few weeks ago. Megan Herberg brings us the sites and news from the 2010 SwissExpo.

January 15th and 16th proved to be exciting days for European Holstein and Brown Swiss breeders as they gathered in Lausanne, Switzerland for the 2010 SwissExpo. The SwissExpo is the prime opportunity for breeders to showcase their breeding programs and one of the most sought-after dairy events in Europe. Taking place each January in the French speaking part of Switzerland, cattle travel from Germany, France, Italy, Austria and of course Switzerland.

Well known American fitter, Pat Conroy, has traveled the world and been to hundreds of shows in many corners of the globe. He has worked at the SwissExpo for the last six years and credits it as one of the best Holstein shows in the world.

Judges Callum McKiven of Quebec and Brian Carscadden of Ontario sorted through large classes of high quality Brown Swiss, Holsteins and Red & White’s respectively. Anyone looking for a travel destination filled with beautiful scenery, tremendous cows and warm hospitality should book their tickets to Switzerland for this world-class dairy affair.

Watch the April issue of Holstein World for more details on registered
Holsteins in Switzerland.

Judge Brian Carscadden of Guelph, ON has completed his placings of the Red & Whites at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto!

41 cows shown – total of 104 head
Grand Champion: Elmbridge FM Loveable-Red, 1st 4-year-old, Tuytel & Lookout Holsteins
Reserve Grand Champion: KHW Regiment Apple-Red, 1st 5-year-old, Apple Partners
HM Grand Champion: Silvermine Adv Tally-Red, 1st Sr. 2-year-old, Milksource Genetics

Judge’s comments: What a great crowd we have for Grand Champion today. First, I’d like to thank the exhibitors for voting me in to judge the Royal. It’s been an honor and a pleasure and I certainly appreciate the opportunity. I’ve pulled out five individuals before us – the Junior Champion, and while she’s not in contention for Grand Champion, she’s still such a beautiful calf. I pulled out my Intermediate Champion, the Sr. 2-year-old – I just love this young cow and she’s got a great future ahead of her. I pulled out these two red cows who are being led by two of the most respected judges in the world and another great uddered cow on the end. But there comes a time when you have to make a choice. I judged a show once with a fellow who asked me which cow he should choose for champion, and I replied that he needed to go with the best udder as long as her frame was good enough. And today, that best udder belongs to this red cow right here. I hate to have to make a reserve of either of these cows, but this other red cow will be reserve. What a tremendous, tremendous pair of cows. However, it’s this dairy, dairy cow that has the best udder. It’s more symmetrical. It’s more balanced in the udder floor, more balanced from left to rear quarters. This red cow in reserve has one unbelievable frame and great style, and I could give all kinds of reasons to make her champion. For honorable mention, I’m going with the Sr. 2-year-old who follows the same pattern. What a great young cow with a fantastic future!

Junior Best Three Females (2)

2. Scott Brethet & Mt. Elgin Dairy

Judges’ comments on Junior Champion: Well ladies & gentlemen, it’s been a tremendous junior portion of the red show. I’ve left six heifers on the inside, which is more than I usually do, but these six all warrant great merit. They were all outstanding in their classes. I like correctness, and I like calves who can make good cows. I like dairyness and strength and these six represent all that. Today, this senior calf can’t be denied. When we see them walk around the ring, this heifer is just so correct, so angular…she’s just an awesome calf. And both she and the reserve could definitely hold their own in black and white shows. For reserve, I’m going with another awesome calf. This March calf is just a little more correct in the way she moves and I prefer how comfortably she walks over this big, tall junior yearling.
