The Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association “Food Drive-Youth Helping Others” was a tremendous success. Junior members from over 20 counties who attended the 2012 Junior Holstein Convention in Gettysburg brought in over 3000 canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Littlestown Food Pantry. Awards were presented by Penn-Gate Farms to the top three counties. Shown above are members of Lancaster County who brought in 1069 items to finish first.

L-R John Hess representing Land O’Lakes, matching grant to the food donated by PA Junior Holstein Members, Pat Martin, Food Bank Coordinator Corbin Wood,Chairman, “Food Drive-Youth Helping Others”
This was the largest single monetary donation that the Littlestown Food Pantry has ever received in its 25-year history. It also matches the entire state goverment funding that was received last year.

Several workshops were held on Friday afternoon including the one on reproduction lead by Dr. Jim Osborne.

It was a packed house for Dairy Bowl finals

Known as the “Crossroads of Georgia”, Perry is the home of the Southern Invitational Show and Sale.

This yearly event is held at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter. Built in the late 1980″2 this state-of-the-art facility has grown from 600 acres to now over 1100 acres.

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the sale. Traditionally, held in April, this year’s sale manager, Dallas Burton decided to move the sale to February. Beautiful 70 degree weather has been enjoyed by everyone all week.

A complimentary, southern cooked meal was enjoyed on Thursday evening.

Followed by a fun auction to support the Georgia Junior Holstein Association.
Ruben Schaapman (below), a 2011 Young Distinguished Junior member finalist, spoke about the benefits of being able to go to the National Holstein Convention and encouraged other youth to fill out DJM books.

In addition to the fun auction, raffle tickets to win this hand-made quilt were also sold to benefit the Junior Association.

In preparation for the 2013 National Holstein Convention in Indianapolis, the Indiana Junior Holstein members are planning many fun and exciting events for the juniors who will attend the 2013 convention.
This active group is having numerous fundraisers to help prepare for the convention. A major fundraiser is an opportunity to win a free calf! A fancy Red and White September calf was graciously donated by Tony T. Bos of Fair Oaks Dairy, Indiana to help the juniors raise money for the convention they will be hosting. This calf, BOSSIR CHRIS NEVADA-RED-ET is out of MD-VALLEYVUE GOLD CHRIS-ET, EX-92. The grand dam is JERLAND RUBENS NAN-RED-ET, EX-93. Tickets for your name to be entered into a drawing can be purchased from any Indiana Junior Holstein member or adult member and each ticket is $5.00 or 5 tickets for $20.00. The winner of the calf will be announced at the 2012 Indiana State Fair 4-H Dairy show in August. Make sure you get in on this opportunity to win a calf!
The juniors are also putting together a cookbook to sell. Any junior member or adult members are to send in their favorite recipe(s) to Robin Matlock, rmatlock81@gmail.com or Marla Stookey, stook@bnin.net. Each junior will be donating their favorite recipes, so be sure to get your hands on one of these cookbooks and see that Indiana juniors have great taste!
Lastly, they are putting together a calendar to sell for the 2013 year. These will be available for purchase starting this summer. Digital copies of photos are in high demand for the success of the calendar. If you happen to have any pictures of any Indiana junior members, please contact Courtney Lipply and send pictures to her at clipply@purdue.edu.
Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to help the Indiana Junior Holstein Assoc. prepare for the 2013 National Holstein Convention in Indianapolis! We hope to see you, “Racing to Indy” in 2013!

Other interesting notes: Murribrook has been named Premier Breeder at the International Diary week three times, and has excelled in the Semex On-Farm dairy challenge.

Holstein USA held its regional meeting on the afternoon of Jan. 20 at the NY Holstein Convention in Syracuse. Region 1 National Director Pete Waterman of Maine chaired the session which included introduction of new dairy management software, an update on the “dairy data alliance” and positive reports of 2011 Association activity and finance. Also discussed were elections for National Directors at the convention in June, an update on milk marketing legislation and a report of the judges conferences held last year with one scheduled for Syracuse in April.

Shown from left are National Director Pete Waterman (ME), National President Chuck Worden (NY) and Director at Large Jonathan Lamb (NY)

Also participating in the meeting were Holstein staff. From left are Field Reps Dave Paddon and Bob Wilson with Dan Meihak from the Brattelboro office.

The Ladies Scholarship committee always have bidding items that “we can not do without” and raise a considerable amount of money. Two familiar faces that keep an eye on the bidding (shown here) are Betty Emerling and Nancy Wright.
