The 2013 UMass 4-H Beef and Dairy Camp that was
held the weekend of May 18-19, 2013 in Northampton/Amherst, MA. This is the
tenth year that they have offered the Dairy Camp and fourth year for the Beef
Camp. On Saturday, we had 161 youth and parents participate in the camp. Our
camp is unique since there is a Parent Camp offered on Saturday to give the
parents the opportunity to learn about showing, nutrition, leasing animals,
trailering, etc. Youth can bring one animal to camp that are housed at the
fairgrounds and the youth and chaperones stay in UMass Dorms so they are
given the opportunity to get exposed to the University of Massachusetts
Amherst and “Dorm Life”. On Saturday, a Novice and Advanced Camp is held
for both Beef and Dairy. A copy (follows) of the Camp Agenda for both
camps to give you an idea of the camper’s day. In the evening, a BBQ was
hosted by UMass at the Campus Center and former 4-H MA members/ college
students, Katie Shaw, Chandler Stevens and Regina Grover hosted the “Minute
to Win It” game. Ninety-nine youth stayed for the weekend. On Sunday AM, a
breakfast buffet started off the day with the Associate Dean of the College
of Natural Sciences, Dr. Stephen Herbert greeting the group. The Dairy
Campers spent the morning at Mapleline Farm participating in Fitting (Ryan
Rida), Showing (Zachary Woodis) and Farm Business Analysis (Dr. Susan
Martson). The youth also enjoyed the AI Workshop with Dr. Katie Beltaire,
DVM. Joyce Thomas has been a camp regular for the past four years and offers
the popular Hoof Care Workshop.

Youth came from MA, CT, RI, VT, NY, and NH. Past campers have had done very
well in Showmanship contests: In 2012, the Reserve Champion Showman at the
Big E, 1st Place Senior at World Dairy Expo, and two were in the finals at
the Premier National Junior Show Contest.
